Hostage Negotiations and Crisis Intervention
(Five-day Course
)

Program & Purpose:

        This five day course combines lectures, incident reviews and role playing scenarios to each attending officer or whose agency is contemplating the structuring of a Crisis Negotiation/ Response team.

         This training will provide the student with the necessary fundamentals and theories regarding the handling of a crisis negotiation/intervention. It will assist the student’s ability to form a Crisis Negotiation team and how to effectively handle crisis situations.

         Through lectures, reviews of actual crisis incidents and classroom discussions the officer will fully enhance his/her ability to handle various aspects of crisis negotiations and intervention. Role-playing scenarios will be a key part of this course so that the officer will understand the dynamics of each fluid situation.

Seminar Agenda:

        fundamentals of Crisis Negotiation discuss the differences between a hostage vs. non-hostage situation explain the Action Criteria tirade

      • list items that are / are not negotiable
      • deadlines & demands
      • demonstrate the common means of communicating with subject
      • how to structure a “Negotiation Team”
      • utilize the seven (7) elements of “Active Listening”
      • suicide intervention
      • explain the four (4) disorders discussed in “abnormal psychology”
      • explain the “why and when” to use TPI
      • discuss the Tactical Role of a Negotiator
      • discuss the formation of the (NOC) and its relationship to the Command Post

Role Playing:

        Officer will negotiate with different role players involved in several challenging situations. The instructors and role players will critique all situations at the conclusion of this course.
